As an artist, I find it necessary to experiment and play, lest I get trapped in the monotony of repetition. And the idea of that, for me personally, makes my skin crawl. While I may be wooed by a certain style, theme, medium, palette for a spell, I am truly a multidisciplinary artist and very diverse in my art. Every now and then, I will take an artistic tangent and shake up my studio with a piece that may seem out of left field. “Finding North” is that most recent one.
As for this piece, I decided to repurpose an old “experiment”, keeping the half of it I loved and fully revamping the rest. As the work evolved, it became layers of mountain ranges with an underlying cartography and topography feel. So I decided to fully lean in, integrating a compass rose pointing to Polaris, the North Star.
Photos don’t do this justice. She’s a spectacular piece with many little nuances and beautiful moments.
